The DIY Hack That Will Change Your Home Forever

Beige walls, basic fixtures, zero personality? We’re not doing that anymore.

This little powder room started out completely forgettable. Think: contractor beige, builder-grade lighting, and a space that screamed “safe but soulless.” I decided it was time to give it a personality — without spending thousands. Spoiler alert: this transformation cost a fraction of what you’d expect, and it’s one of my favorite makeovers to date.
And the best part? You can copy this exact formula anywhere in your home.
Boujee on a Budget
The secret to high-end design without the high-end price tag? It’s all about materials.
Instead of expensive wood paneling, I used MDF panels and cut them down to create chunky baseboards and trimwork. The thicker profile instantly made the room feel custom, like something you’d see in a boutique hotel — not a builder-grade bathroom.
Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to fake it. Once painted, MDF looks just as elevated as solid wood, especially when you add crown molding or picture-frame details.
Fun Patterns Change the Game
If you’ve got a small space, that’s actually a superpower. Powder rooms are perfect places to take a design risk.
I went bold with a whimsical wallpaper full of owls, branches, and woodland magic — something I probably wouldn’t commit to in a large space, but in a tiny bathroom? It’s art. Patterns like this make guests stop and say “wait… this is stunning,” and that’s exactly the energy we want.
So go wild. Play with pattern, color, and texture in the places that don’t take themselves too seriously.
Pick Your Power Color
Remember the last slide? The same rule applies to paint — go bold or go home.
The wallpaper completely transformed when paired with this deep, mossy green. White would’ve washed it out, but this color grounded the space and gave the print somewhere to shine. A strong wall color sets the tone (literally) for everything else in the room — so pick something that makes your heart skip a beat.
Need a sign to paint your trim green? This is it.
Style It Like a Pro
Now for the fun part — the details.
This is where you add your personality. I mixed metals (yes, you can!) with gold light fixtures and black hardware. Then I brought in a wavy statement mirror that totally stole the show.
Don’t shy away from playing with lines and shapes. Funky, unexpected pieces make your space feel intentional — not like it came from a showroom.
Your Turn ✨
This wasn’t a months-long renovation — it’s a weekend project that packs serious punch. The best part? You’ll see instant results, and so will your guests.
So copy and paste this formula into your next small space:
Budget-friendly materials
Bold pattern
Statement color
Playful styling
Then tag me when you try it — because your home deserves a little personality too.
Shop the look
(I may earn a small commission on some of these links at no extra cost to you)
Paint color: Benjamin Moore “Hancock Gray” (or your favorite earthy green), I used the Behr line and had it color matched
Wallpaper: Whimsical forest print
Mirror: Wooden wavy edge statement mirror that adds warmth
Light fixture: Brass sconce with globe shade, can be faced up OR down depending on the needs for your space!
Mdf Panel: You can get these in many different places but these are the exact ones I used. ALWAYS prime them before painting!
Save This For Later
Pin it, screenshot it, or write it on a post-it — because this combo (MDF trim, bold wallpaper, and a power color) works every single time.
And remember: home isn’t about perfection. It’s about personality.
